Suspected NPA Ambush Six Policemen Died

DUMAGUETE CITY, July 21 (PNA) — Six policemen, including a police chief, were killed and three others wounded during an ambush Friday by suspected Communist terrorists in Barangay Magsaysay, Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental.

The investigation identified one of the victims as Supt. Ariel Arpon, the police chief of Guihulngan.

Initial police investigation showed that the police received a call on an alleged ambush which prompted policemen to respond around 10 a.m. Friday.

The names of the other victims were not made available pending notification of their next of kin.

Acting provincial police director, Sr. Supt. Henry Binas, immediately proceeded to Guinhulngan, more than 100 km’s north of this capital.

Lt. Col. Roderick Garcia, commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, said they are also conducting pursuit operations.

Garcia suspects the incident was perpetrated by members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
